Description

Numbers 23 to 28, including the Hyland Hotel, are a group of six dwellings dating from around 1855, now used as a hotel and flats. The buildings are constructed of brick, with a plastered exterior, and have a slate roof. They are three storeys high, with a basement and attic. Each dwelling consists of two bays, with the end bays projecting forward. Giant pilasters are set on a rusticated ground floor, defining these bays. Each house originally had a door opening, sometimes now replaced with a window, with a tripartite sash window to the left. The first-floor windows have cornices supported by scrolled consoles, while the second-floor windows have architraves and moulded sills. Continuous wrought-iron balconies are present on the end bays, and a moulded string course runs across the intermediate bays. A second-floor sill band and a moulded eaves cornice are also visible. The return front on the left side features a three-storey bow window to the left, a single-storey bow to the right, and a central doorway below a cornice on scrolled consoles. A pedimented gable is also present.
