Description

This is a pair of early 19th-century houses located on the south side of York Place in Knaresborough. They are built of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a Westmorland slate roof. Each house is three storeys tall with an attic, and each has two bays with a door to the right.

Number 10 (on the left) features a six-panel door with an overlight, set within a stone architrave and cornice. A canted bay window is present on the left side. A 16-pane bow sash window sits on the first floor left, with bowed brickwork beneath. Above this, segmental-headed sash windows with glazing bars are found on the right and second floors, set within flush wood architraves with projecting stone sills and channelled wedge lintels.

Number 8 (on the right) has a 20th-century glazed door with an overlight in an architrave similar to that of number 10. A stone-mullioned canted bay sash window extends across the ground and first floor on the left side. A blind window sits above the doors, while the second floor has sash windows with segmental heads. All windows on this side have projecting stone sills and channelled wedge lintels. A dormer with a four-pane sash is visible on the roof. Shaped gutter brackets and chimney stacks are present on the left side of both houses.

The interior of number 10 retains original panelled doors, window reveals, and cast-iron basket grates. A particularly fine original staircase rises through all four floors, characterized by newels in the form of Tuscan columns, rectangular section balusters, and a ramped, moulded handrail.
