Description

This late 18th-century house is now part of the Newton House Hotel. It was extensively refenestrated in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of limestone, with a stone slate roof. It is three storeys high and has three bays. A wide carriage arch is on the right side, with rusticated voussoirs and a keystone featuring a mask and scroll motif. A central six-panel door sits within a stone architrave. To the left of the door is a four-pane sash window, slightly recessed and with a projecting sill. A sill band runs along the first floor. The left and centre bays feature four-pane sashes with small cast-iron balconies; the right bay, above the archway, has a large four-pane sash with margin lights. The second floor also has four-pane sashes. Segmental-arched, channelled wedge lintels are present above all the windows. Paired stone gutter brackets are also visible. The 19th-century replacement windows largely appear to have used the original window openings, although the ground floor below the sill band level may have been rebuilt.
