Description

Thornton Stud is a stable building dating from the late 18th century, with some alterations and additions made in the early 20th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring stone dressings and a graduated stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and consists of nine bays arranged in a 1:2:3:2:1 pattern. The stables are square in plan, although there have been 20th-century alterations and extensions to the rear.

The main front of the building has a stone plinth, with wide end bays and a central three-bay section that projects forward. There is a large central stepped, full-height, round-arched carriage opening, which is flanked by blind round-arched openings. On either side of the central three bays, there are round-arched openings that contain 4-pane sash windows. The outer bays feature full-height triple, stepped round arches with early 20th-century openings, including two 4-pane sashes below and two quadrant sashes above.

A stone band runs along the first floor, with square louvred openings that have stone sills and flat brick arches flanking the central arch, along with two circular windows on either side. The eaves have a moulded stone band, and the central three bays are topped with a moulded pediment that includes a clock. The roof is hipped, and there are ventilation louvres at the ridge. Thornton Stud was formerly the stables for Thornton Hall, which has since been demolished.
