Description

East Lodge North and East Lodge South to Thornton Stud are a pair of lodges built in the late 18th century. They are constructed of ashlar stone, rendered at the rear, and feature Welsh slate roofs. Each lodge is square in shape, two stories tall, and has one bay.

The front elevations of both lodges showcase large Venetian windows with 20th-century small-pane casements, adorned with a swagged frieze, cornice, and archivolt. These windows are set within full-height round-arched recesses that include an impost band and voussoirs. The central area of the stonework projects slightly, creating recessed corners. The eaves feature a reeded frieze with paterae, and above the central section is a pediment. The roofs are hipped and include a central chimney stack.

The inward-facing elevations have two steps leading up to a central six-panel door, which is framed with an architrave, swagged frieze, and cornice supported by consoles. Above the door is a round window with radiating glazing bars and an architrave, also set in a full-height round-arched recess with an impost band and voussoirs. The front elevations have similar friezes and cornices. At the rear of the lodges, there are modern one-storey extensions. These lodges were formerly associated with Thornton Hall, which has since been demolished.
