Description

Hole Bottom House and the attached barn are a mid to late 17th century house and a mid 18th century barn, both constructed from coursed squared gritstone with a graduated stone slate roof. The house has two storeys and four bays, featuring a projecting three-storey porch in bay three and an additional bay to the left. The right side of the house has quoins and a chamfered plinth. The porch includes a six-panel door in a quoined surround with an incised lintel, corbels supporting the projecting first floor, and stressed quoins. The house has three-light recessed-chamfered mullion windows on the first and second (attic) floors, with the top window featuring stepped lights. The gable ends have shaped kneelers and gable coping topped with ball finials.

On the main range, the ground floor has an inserted two-light window in a plain stone surround in bay one, while bays two and four have five-light recessed-chamfered mullion windows. The first floor features a round-headed light in bay one and recessed-chamfered mullion windows in bays two and four. The house has central and end stacks, and the additional bay to the left has quoins and a shaped kneeler with a ball finial and gable coping, likely reused from the main house.

The barn has a central cart entrance with quoined jambs and a segmental arch. To the far right, there is a byre door in a quoined surround with a plain lintel, and a square six-pane window is located between. The barn also features a shaped kneeler, ball finial, and gable coping, which are probably reused from the main house. Additionally, there is a single-storey lean-to addition on the right side. The interior was not inspected during the resurvey.
