Description
The Skipwith War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1923, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of Scottish silver granite and is located on the south side of the church along the path leading to the entrance of St Helen’s Church from Main Street.
The memorial features a wheel-head cross with a tapering shaft, which is decorated with Celtic knot work patterns on the front. This shaft is set on a tapering plinth, which stands on a base of two rectangular steps, with the first step being higher than the second. The memorial is approximately 2.4 meters tall.
On the eastern face of the shaft and the plinth, there is a dedicatory inscription and names rendered in leaded lettering. The main inscription at the bottom of the shaft reads: "TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF THOSE FROM THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." The eastern side of the plinth lists eleven names of men who fell during the First World War, arranged in alphabetical order by surname, followed by the inscription "I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE." The southern side of the plinth includes four names of men who fell during the Second World War.
