Description
Skipwith Hall is a house dating from the early 18th century, with later additions and alterations, including an extension to the rear and early 20th-century wings. It is constructed of pinkish-brown narrow brick in English bond, featuring red brick and ashlar dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The layout includes a central hallway plan with a rear range.
The building is three storeys high with a seven-bay centre flanked by two-storey, three-bay wings. There is a step leading to the central entrance, which features an eight-fielded-panel door with an overlight set within an eared architrave that has a keystone. The ground and first floors have twelve-pane sash windows, while the second floor features four-pane Yorkshire sashes. All windows have ashlar sills and flat arches made of red rubbed brick, although many are now rendered. The exterior also includes floor bands and a low parapet. A staircase window at the rear has twelve fixed panes with radial glazing at the top, set under a round arch of gauged brick. The roof is two-span with ridge and side stacks.
Inside, the hall retains many early 18th-century features, including an openwell staircase with two column-on-vase balusters per tread and a ramped and wreathed handrail. The staircase window has a moulded architrave with Corinthian pilasters, and there is a decorative frieze and cornice in the staircase hall. The ceiling features panelling with a Greek key motif and acanthus modillions. Most of the first-floor rooms and two front ground floor rooms have panelling, with one room featuring an alcove with shaped shelves, and the doors are mainly eight-fielded-panel types. There is also a closed string dog-leg service staircase in the rear range, which has sturdy vase balusters.
