Description
Abbey Cottage is part of a medieval complex that forms Spennithorne Old Hall and has been converted into a house. It dates back to the 14th century and has undergone extensive remodelling. The building is constructed of rubble and features an artificial slate roof. It is two storeys high and consists of two offset, parallel ranges, with a 20th-century single-storey extension on the left. The south elevation has three 20th-century first-floor windows on one range and two on the other, along with a ruined section to the right. There are fragments of old masonry and blocked windows throughout the structure.
At the rear of the side elevations, there are medieval external doorways leading to a screens passage; one doorway is glazed while the other is blocked. These doorways feature pointed double-chamfered arches with hollow mouldings on the chamfers. Inside, there are four original doorways from the screens passage, three of which have shouldered doorheads and chamfered openings leading to the pantry, kitchen, and buttery, while the fourth doorway leads to the staircase. This building was historically associated with the hall of the Fitz Randalls of Spennithorne.
