Description

The Downe Arms is an inn built around 1800, with later alterations and extensions in the 19th and 20th centuries, constructed for the Wykeham estate. The building features dressed sandstone on the front and right side, coursed rubble sandstone on the left side and rear, a timber eaves course, and a pantile roof. It has a central-entry plan that is two rooms deep, with a rear service wing added before 1850.

The three-storey front has three recessed, round-arched bays. The central door consists of six flush panels beneath a radial fanlight, set in a plain round-arched surround. Above the door is a 12-pane sash window. The ground and first-floor windows in the flanking bays are tripartite sashes, while the second floor has segment-headed 6-pane sashes. There are end stacks at the base of the hipped roof. At the rear, there is a radial-glazed staircase window to the right of centre.

Inside, a closed-string, dogleg staircase rises through the house to the second floor. It features a moulded handrail that ramps up, with reeded balusters and some re-used 18th-century turned balusters between the first and second floors. The staircase hall and ground-floor passage have a moulded plaster cornice. The doors are made of six raised and fielded panels. The ground-floor room to the right includes a fireplace with a moulded surround and fluted cornice, flanked by alcove cupboards with panelled doors, and a moulded dado rail.
