Description

The tunnel under the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, built in 1774 by engineer James Brindley, serves as both a tunnel and aqueduct for the canal. It is constructed from squared rubble with stone dressings. The tunnel is positioned at an obtuse angle to the canal and features projecting impost blocks made of dressed stone, as well as voussoirs that form a basket arch. Additionally, there is a string course and coping on the retaining wall of the canal.
