Description

The Church of St John the Baptist and All Saints is a Grade II* listed building, primarily dating from the 15th century. It features a re-set door from around 1200 on the north side of the nave, along with possible remnants of earlier construction. The church underwent restoration in the 19th century and is built of ashlar stone. The chancel roof is covered with Welsh slate, while the rest of the building has a lead roof and ashlar coping.

The structure includes a west tower, a five-bay nave with a later south porch, and a three-bay chancel. The tower is three stages high and embattled, originally featuring a high open west porch, of which the chamfered pointed arch remains but is now blocked with a later door and window. The nave and chancel have straight-headed two-light windows with simple panel tracery, most of which have been restored. The hood moulds above these windows have head stops, primarily modern replacements. The building also has angle buttresses with concave set-offs and a two-centred three-light east window with renewed decorated tracery under a hood mould with stops.

On the north side of the nave, there is a re-set two-centred door with roll moulding and colonettes that have moulded capitals and weathered waterholding bases. Inside, the nave features an arcade of double-chamfered arches that rest on octagonal piers, and the double-chamfered chancel arch also dies into the imposts. A notable interior feature is the monument to Thomas Rayns, who died in 1713, which is adorned with Ionic pilasters and a broken pediment that includes a hatchment.
