Description

Studdah Farmhouse is a farmhouse that possibly dates back to the 16th century, with later alterations and an early 19th-century extension. It is constructed of rubble sandstone and features stone slate roofs. The building has two storeys and three first-floor windows, with a later cross wing to the right. The main range is made of rubble interspersed with courses of slate and includes a plinth and first-floor quoins. The central board door has a chamfered surround with a segmental-arched head and hoodmould, featuring a head on the left stop and a sheep's head on the right stop. To the left of the door, there is an 8-pane sash window in a chamfered surround. It appears that the original range extended further to the left, as indicated by a straight joint to the right of the door, suggesting the building has been raised in height. There is a blocked doorway with a timber lintel to the right of the straight joint, and other windows are 20th-century casements. The left side has ashlar coping, and the roof is hipped to the right, with end stacks.

The added projecting range to the right is made of coursed stone and features quoins. Each floor has a 16-pane sash window in a raised ashlar surround with a deeper lintel, and the roof is hipped. The right return of the added range has three bays, quoins, and a central part-glazed 4-panel door below a 2-pane overlight in a stone surround with a raised edge; the windows are as previously described. The roof is also hipped. Studdah was once a village with its own chapel, as noted by Edmund Bogg in "Richmondshire and the Vale of Mowbray" (1906), page 534.
