Description

This guide stone, dated 1712, is located opposite the gates of Eagle Lodge in Thornton Steward, Danby. It is made of sandstone and has five sides, standing approximately one metre high. The front of the stone faces the Eagle gates and is inscribed with 'Ye Road To SIMON SCROOP Esqr. of Danby 1712'. The left side features the inscription 'MID-EL-HAM', while the left rear side is marked 'Ley-Burn'. The right side reads 'BED-ALL RIP-PON ROAD', and the right rear side is inscribed with 'Rich-Mond'.
