Description
The Church of St Simon and St Jude is a Roman Catholic chapel built in 1868 for Simon Thomas Scrope of Danby Hall. It is constructed from coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof. The building has an irregular cruciform plan and includes quoins. The openings have depressed round-arched heads, with a doorway located in the south-east angle and a north window consisting of three lights. An octagonal tower with a belfry, which has paired openings with stiff-leaf capitals and a decorative tile roof, rises above the western arm of the church. The interior is oriented liturgically east to the geographic north. Below the church lies an older crypt, which serves as the burial place for the Scropes of Danby. The church is attached to the north of the Presbytery, and the tower is a notable feature in the landscape.
