Description
Foundry Farmhouse and the attached outbuilding are located in Wrelton and date from the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The farmhouse is built of dressed limestone and features a pantile roof, with concrete pantiles at the rear and brick chimney stacks. It has a central-entry plan that is one room deep, along with a rear service wing. The front of the house is two stories high with two windows, while the attached outbuilding is 1.5 stories tall and has two bays. The main entrance consists of a door with four recessed panels and an overlight above it. The windows throughout the building are 20th-century small-pane replacements with casements and painted stone sills, and all openings have painted tooled lintels. The gables are coped and have shaped kneelers, with chimney stacks at each end.
The outbuilding, which was originally open-sided at the front and rear, has a plank door to the left of a two-light, eight-pane casement window. There is a similar window on the first floor and a shuttered opening to the left. This outbuilding served as the moulding shop for the Wrelton Iron Foundry, which was operated from the farmhouse by Isaac Hartas and William Rickaby in the latter half of the 19th century. Wooden patterns made in the foundry joiners' shop were stored in the loft above the moulding shop, which originally had access to the foundry smithy on the right side. The foundry produced castings for the Rosedale mines using local ore, as well as various domestic fittings, including kitchen ranges and portable horse engines. A working range from this foundry can still be found in Cruck Cottage, Cropton. At the time of the last survey, the foundry smithy and joiners' shop were under separate ownership. The building is included in the heritage register for its historical significance.
