Description

Seamen's Hospital, built in 1842 by Sir Gilbert Scott, is located on Church Street. The hospital has a Jacobean front elevation with two storeys and consists of nine bays. It is constructed of brick and features mullioned stone windows along with openwork balustraded parapets. The central gatehouse includes round niches above the archway, which is topped with a trophy of flags and cannon. Additionally, there is a pedimented feature flanked by model wood ship hulls and topped with a model rigged ship. The hospital was originally founded in 1670. Seamen's Hospital, along with Nos 44 to 51 (consecutive), forms a group.
