Description
Norton le Clay Farm Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, which was rebuilt in brick in the mid to late 18th century. It features red and brown brick in English and random bond, topped with a pantile roof. The cottage has a three-cell baffle-entry plan with a rear outshut, and the upper floor is partly within the roof space. There is a four-panel door to the right of the central bay, with a second door inserted to the right of the first bay. The ground floor has three 3-light, 18-pane side-sliding sash windows, while the first floor features three 2-light side-sliding sash windows in bays two and three. A ridge stack is located above the main door, and there is an external stack at the left end.
Inside, there are substantial remains of the original timber-framed structure, including rear aisle posts with curved braces, cross walls, and roof timbers, along with ceiling beams and chamfered joists. The interior also includes back-to-back fireplaces with mantel beams; the central room has a scarfed main beam at the fireplace, indicating an earlier timber-framed firehood. The fireplace in bay three contains a cast-iron range made by Cowland and Young of Ripon.
