Description

This is a police station, likely dating from the mid-19th century and probably converted from a house in the late 19th century. The building has undergone 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of snecked limestone with millstone grit dressings and a stone slate roof. The design follows a central staircase plan, comprising two storeys and three bays. The central entrance features a chamfered surround and a large pediment supported by consoles, above a six-panel door and a rectangular fanlight. The ground floor and upper floor windows have plain surrounds and sash windows (without glazing bars to the ground floor). A thick sill band runs along the upper floor. Notable features include projecting quoins, eaves modillions, and gable end ridge stacks. Inside, a dog-leg staircase is present, with an open string, stick balusters to the first flight, and turned balusters to the remaining flights, alongside a wreathed handrail. The first floor contains a magistrate's court with panelled benches and a witness stand, probably dating from around 1900.
