Description
The Parish Church of St John is a Gothic Revival style church built between 1851 and 1857, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott. It features a nave with five bays, a two-bay chancel, aisles, and a west tower intended to support a spire that was never constructed. The roof is made of graduated green slate with corbelled eaves. The exterior is constructed from grit stone ashlar, accented with contrasting colour ashlar dressings. The aisles are adorned with lancet windows, while the clerestory has two-light windows. The sanctuary windows are set in a blind arcade and include three tall lancets at the east end, featuring stained glass by Grace. Inside, the arcade piers are decorated with stiff leaf and naturalistic foliage, and the open timber roof showcases trefoil trusses. The internal layout was recently modified, with the organ moved to the west end. The south porch has an arched entrance with receding orders and naturalistic foliage details.
