Description

The Dower House is a house built around 1710, featuring an earlier wing on the right and later infill at the rear. It is constructed from magnesian limestone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof and has an L-shaped plan. The 18th-century section is two and a half storeys high and has five bays, which is built onto the gable end of a likely 17th-century house that is two low storeys and one bay. The building has a plinth and quoining at the ends. The entrance features a 20th-century glazed door set in an ashlar surround, located in the third bay. The windows are sashes with glazing bars, all in ashlar surrounds with chamfered cills, some of which have been recut. There is a moulded ashlar band on the first floor of the 18th-century section. The roof has dormers with Yorkshire sashes and glazing bars, along with ashlar coping and kneelers on the gable-ended range. The 18th-century section has a hipped roof and features end and ridge stacks. There is an additional entrance at the rear, which has two steps leading to a six-panel door beneath an oblong fanlight with radial glazing bars, framed by a pilastered doorcase with acanthus consoles supporting a broken pediment. Inside, there is a covered beamed ceiling and some moulded cornices, a marble rococo fireplace in the left room, an 18th-century open-well staircase with turned balusters, and several six-panel doors in recessed panelled surrounds.
