Description
No 36 on Frenchgate is a large 18th-century mansion built from coursed stone. It stands three storeys high and features a stone-capped parapet and a stone string course. The façade has six windows, with the side wings having one window that projects forward. The building has chamfered quoins at the center and moulded stone frames, with no glazing bars on the two upper central floors. The main entrance is framed by a stone doorcase with engaged columns, an architrave, a frieze decorated with two wreaths, and a moulded cornice above. The door itself consists of six panels and has a segmental traceried fanlight above it. To the left, there is a side door with a heavily rusticated architrave and a panelled lintel featuring a keystone.
On the right side, there is a one-storey extension that has a parapet, a brick stack, and a flat carriage entry. The extreme right side includes a round-arched opening with a keystone, which contains a modern window. The building has bands that continue across the head, along with a parapet and string course. The side elevation features seven windows with brick arches in older openings. Nos 30 to 36 on Frenchgate form a group.
