Description
23-29 North End in Bedale is a building that likely dates back to the 16th century, although it has an 18th-century exterior. The structure is made of rubblestone and is rendered, featuring a roof that combines machine tiles and pantiles, with stone slates on the lower courses. It may have originally been an open hall and includes a half-timbered, gabled, jettied cross wing on the right side.
The building has two storeys and four bays, with the right bay projecting forward. The late 19th-century shopfronts are notable, and there is a board door on the left side, next to a half-glazed door with an architrave. Central passageway openings lead to a board door and a four-pane sash window on the right bay. On the first floor, the left and right bays feature four-pane sash windows, while the central bays have sashes with glazing bars. The ridge stack is located on the roof, which is hipped to the right.
Inside, between the second and third bays, there is a large tie beam with struts above the first-floor level. Below the chimney, a half-timbered wall includes a 16th-century timber and plaster smoke hood with cambered ties to the chimney breast. The 18th-century stack is positioned on top of this structure.
