Description

GREAT AYTON LOW GREEN NZ 5510 (north side) 11/110 Cook headstone 2 yards east of Church of All Saints GV II Headstone, mid C18. Sandstone with shaped top. Central medallion has primitive winged angel head flanked by leafy scrolls. Inscription below: To ye Memory of Mary & Mary: Jane & Wm. Daughters and Son of James and Grace Cook. Mary did lune ye 30th 1737 in ye 5th year of her Age. Mary did lune ye 17th 1741 aged 10 Months & 6 days. Jane did May ye 12th 1742 in ye 5th year of her Age. Willm did lar ye 29th 174 7/8 Aged 2 yrs 12 Mohs 16 das 7 hors. and also lohn Thare (sic) son dyed Sept the 20th 1750.

Modern inscription on reverse to parents of Captain James Cook and also of these children, his brothers and sisters. Included for historical interest.
