Description
The Cook headstone, located 2 yards east of the Church of All Saints, is a Grade II listed headstone from the mid-18th century. It is made of sandstone and features a shaped top. The central medallion displays a primitive winged angel head, which is flanked by leafy scrolls. The inscription below commemorates Mary and Mary, Jane and William, the children of James and Grace Cook. It notes that Mary died on June 30th, 1737, at the age of 5; another Mary died on June 17th, 1741, at 10 months and 6 days; Jane died on May 12th, 1742, at the age of 5; and William died on March 29th, 1747, at 2 years, 12 months, and 16 days. Additionally, it mentions John, who died on September 20th, 1750. There is a modern inscription on the reverse side that refers to the parents of Captain James Cook and also to these children, his siblings. This headstone is included for its historical interest.
