Roman Catholic Chapel of 1877 to 1879 by AE Purdie for Sir Percival Radcliffe, Bt. Coursed, rock-faced gritstone and ashlar, Westmorland slate roof. Five-bay nave with clerestory and side aisles, two-bay chancel with side-chapels and (added in 1907, also by Purdie) octagonal mortuary chapel attached to east end. A very large chapel in High Victorian Gothic style, with five-light east window with cinquefoils and quatrefoil openings. above. Four-light west window above main entrance. Stepped buttresses, ashlar gable copings, bellcote over junction between nave and chancel. The mortuary chapel has ornate crocketed pinnacles and a steep roof.

Interior: nave:circular piers of polished Aberdeen granite with naturalistic capitals. Other columns of pink marble with foliate capitals flank clerestory windows, and groups of three angels with musical instruments support triple columns of chancel arch. Elaborate reredos with flanking doorways, all with carvings of saints and crockets. Original fittings and furniture.

HISTORICAL NOTE: the elaborate NW porch with stepped buttresses and octagonal stair vice is the base of an intended but unfinished tower and steeple that formed part of Purdie’s original designs.
