Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a church built in 1839 by Ignatius Bonomi, with alterations made in 1910. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features a machine-tile roof. The church comprises a tower, nave, and chancel, with a vestry located to the north.
The tower, added in 1910, has three stages and is supported by offset angle buttresses. It includes a pointed-arched panelled door with a chamfered surround and hoodmould, a band, a chamfered 1-light pointed-arched window, another band, and a 2-light Perpendicular-style belfry window with a hoodmould. The tower is topped with an embattled parapet that has pinnacles at the corners.
The nave consists of four bays, each with diagonal buttresses at either end and angle buttresses between the bays. It features 2-light y-tracery pointed-arched windows, a band, and a parapet with chamfered coping and a gable cross. The chancel has one bay, a diagonal buttress, a band, a parapet with chamfered coping, and a gable cross. The east window of the chancel is a three-light y-traceried pointed-arched window with a hoodmould.
