Description

Londesborough Lodge is a villa dating from the late 1830s, exhibiting simplified neo-Greek architectural details. The building is constructed of ashlar and has an irregular plan due to differing orientations of the entrance and garden fronts. It was enlarged and improved in 1853 by the first Lord Londesborough.

The entrance features a projecting central section with bevelled, rusticated corners; the bays on either side splay outwards at approximately 180 degrees. The roof is hipped and covered in slate, with bracketed, moulded overhanging eaves. The front has three windows over the door, with a single window in each splayed bay. The central window is larger, with glazing bar sashes. The modern door is set within a surround of panelled stone pilaster strips and console brackets supporting a cornice. Later wings, built in a matching style of one and two storeys, extend at the same angle as the end bays of the main block.

The north-east return front of the left-hand wing has three windows, and a pilastered rectangular bay window supported on shaped brackets. The south-east garden front follows a similar splayed plan, with a canted projection of three windows featuring paired sashes flanked by Greek Key pattern panels. A heavy, interlaced circle stone balcony, resting on shaped brackets, is positioned above the ground-floor windows, along with a French window flanked by panelled stone strips.

Historically, the house served as the Scarborough villa of the first Earl of Londesborough, and Edward VII was entertained there in 1871. A private footbridge over Vernon Road, now separately listed, provided access to the Spa Bridge and the Spa. The lodge is situated within fine grounds extending down to the valley. Londesborough Lodge, along with Woodend, the Art Gallery, and the White House (including gates and gate piers), forms a significant group.
