Description
Woodend is a villa built around 1835-1840, originally belonging to the Sitwell family in Scarborough. The building has two storeys and an attic, constructed from ashlar stone. It features a string course at the first floor, a cornice, and a blocking course, topped with a low pitch hipped slate roof. The rectangular structure displays some plain late neo-Greek architectural details and has five bay fronts with glazing bar sash windows, except for the west side, which includes a two-storey service extension.
The north front has a central recessed panel for the doorway, with a window above it. The entrance features a panelled door surrounded by a stone frame with incised panelled pilasters, scroll brackets, and a cornice. The east front boasts a tall central stair window, while the south front has a continuous first-floor balcony supported by a segmental arched arcade. There is also a large greenhouse attached to the east side of the villa. The interior has been altered by Sir G Sitwell and later for use as a museum. Woodend is set in attractive grounds that extend down to the valley.
Woodend, along with the Art Gallery, Londesborough Lodge, and The White House (which includes gates and gate piers), forms an important architectural group.
