Description

Thirsk Hall is a manor house built in 1720, with additions made by John Carr in 1770, which included a top storey and side wings. The building features reddish-brown local brick with stone dressings, including chamfered quoins and bands at floor levels, although the uppermost band has recently been removed. It has a shallow hipped slate roof and low parapets on the side wings. The central block is three storeys tall with five bays, while the two-storey side wings, which are slightly recessed, have three bays each. There is a later, lower two-storey extension to the south that is set back. The central entrance is approached by a flight of six stone steps and features a wooden doorcase from around 1770, which includes a moulded architrave and two consoles supporting a pediment that breaks through the first-floor band. The entrance has a panelled door with a patterned radial fanlight. The sash windows have glazing bars and are set in flush moulded cases with gauged flat brick arches and cills. The garden front includes an early 19th-century cast iron verandah.

Inside, to the right of the entrance, there is a room decorated in the style of 1730-40, featuring a beamed ceiling with a Greek Key motif that recurs on the overmantel and doorways, along with pulvinated bay-leaf friezes and dentilled cornices. The large ground floor room in the right wing, added by Carr, has a very fine ceiling. The first-floor rooms largely retain their 18th-century fireplaces and cornices.
