Description

The Missions to Seamen is a late 18th-century house located on Haggarsgate. This handsome building features three storeys constructed of brick with a rendered basement. It has a symmetrical façade with a wide spacing of sash windows arranged in a 1-3-1 pattern. The central section slightly projects under a pediment that includes a round window. The exterior is adorned with stone quoins, window surrounds, doorway, cill bands, a plinth, and a dentilled cornice, along with an additional band above the ground floor. The ground floor windows are highlighted by square block rustications and triple keystones, with cill brackets.

A central porch, supported by Doric columns, has a pediment and narrow sash windows set back under a continued entablature featuring mutules and guttae. The main entrance consists of a door with six fielded panels and steps leading up to it. The first-floor windows are framed with eaved architraves and cill consoles, and the central window has a segmental dentilled pediment on consoles with a brick apron. The second-floor windows are finished with stone architraves.

Inside, there is a good original well staircase and a secondary staircase. A chapel occupies the front of the first floor, featuring panelling and two mantelpieces. On the ground floor, a small room boasts a fine bowed wood Venetian window with Corinthian columns. The decoration of the front left-hand room was sold after the war and is no longer present. The building also contains contemporary doors and cases. The Missions to Seamen, along with The Star Cafe and Warden's House, form a group of significant premises.
