Description
The Church Hall in Scrayingham, built in 1853, was formerly a parochial school and is likely the work of architect G T Andrews. This single-storey building is made of red brick in English garden wall bond, featuring stone dressings around the doors, windows, and quoins, all topped with a grey slate roof.
The hall consists of one main room, with an attached porch on one side and a kitchen at the rear. It is set back from the road to the south, with a grassy area where the former school yard was located, enclosed by iron rail fencing.
On the exterior, the front facade has three windows: two smaller ones with stone mullions and dressings, and a larger central window with a replacement timber mullion and transom, all beneath a gablet with plain timber barge boards. A date stone above the central window incorrectly reads AD MDCCCXLCIII; the correct date is 1853. To the left, there is a lower section containing the main entrance, which features a plank timber door with stone dressings. The gable end on the right side has a stone mullioned and transomed window, along with a small single light above, both with stone dressings. To the right, there is a half-glazed timber door leading into the rear extension. The porch on the left side has a narrow window in its gable end and is narrower than the main building, which has similar fenestration to the right side but with the main window offset towards the rear. At the back, the main roof extends to form an extension with a single window, and there is an additional low single-storey brick extension with doors on either side.
Inside, the porch leads into the main room, which has a lowered ceiling and timber floorboards. The galley kitchen is located in the rear extension, and access to the toilets is from the exterior.
