Description

Peat Ghyll Head Farm is a farmhouse dating to 1680, as indicated by a datestone. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with a stone slate roof. It has two storeys and originally two windows, now both with modern casements set within unmoulded stone surrounds. An enclosed stone porch is situated to the left of the windows. This porch features a chamfered, triangular-headed doorway with massive jambs and a finely decorated lintel bearing the inscription "RMW 1680," interspersed with stars and fleurs-de-lys, and with swords carved into the spandrels. The porch may have been rebuilt, as it now covers an opening in the front facade. A small two-light, chamfered mullion window is located at the rear. Two chimneys are present, one positioned over a massive, though now enclosed, chimney breast inside the building, opposite the inner doorway.
