Description
House. Mainly early 18th century, with older, possibly 16th century, origins and later alterations. Constructed of brown brick with a Westmorland slate roof. The house has a U-shaped plan, with a main range of three storeys and five bays.
The east front features a central part-glazed door below a fanlight with decorative glazing bars, contained within a round-arched ashlar surround. This surround incorporates Roman Doric three-quarter columns with fluted capitals and paterae on the entablature, supporting an open pediment. There are renewed sash windows with glazing bars, exposed sash boxes, ashlar sills, and deep flat brick arches. The second-floor windows have six panes each, with the central one blind. A brick dentil eaves course runs along the top, and the roof is hipped. A large central stack is present.
At the rear, a two-light chamfered mullion window is visible, made of red sandstone with iron stanchions, and extends down to the basement. Older, steeper gables form an M-shaped roof. The left return is of sandstone rubble with two storeys, incorporating 20th-century sash windows with glazing bars on each floor. On the right return is a two-storey canted bay window of sashes with glazing bars, set within ashlar sandstone and featuring Roman Doric three-quarter columns plus a hipped roof. A projection, which may be an early chimney stack, is present, with a bell attached at a high level. A lower kitchen range is located to the rear right, and a conservatory, formerly used as a school room, is also present. Several lead rainwater pipes with fluted hopper-heads are attached to the building.
