Description
Piersburgh Grange is a house that was formerly an inn, dating from the early to mid-18th century, with an earlier core. It is constructed of small local red brick in English garden wall bond, featuring stepped eaves courses. The roof is pantiled, with brick copings and kneelers, and there are end chimneys. The building has two storeys and three large windows. The sash windows have gauged flat brick arches and wood architraves with glazing bars, and there are external boarded shutters. A central gabled modern porch has been added using old materials. Inside, original features include an inglenook and beamed ceilings, as well as deep, barrel-vaulted cellars with a stone-walled well. To the left is a lower, two-storey granary built in similar materials. Historically, this site was known as the former Malt Kiln Inn and was the birthplace of Major Christopher Richmond, a friend of George Washington who played a significant role in the American War of Independence and the subsequent legal settlements.
