Description

The hearse house, built around 1825, is located approximately 20 meters southeast of the Church of St Andrew. It is constructed from coursed squared gritstone and ashlar, topped with a graduated stone slate roof. This single-storey, one-bay building features an entrance on the west gable, with double board doors, one of which includes a pedestrian door. The entrance is framed by long and short jamb stones and voussoirs that form a round arch made of ashlar masonry. The entrance gable is adorned with shaped kneelers and gable coping. There is an inserted stack on the north wall, and an outbuilding added to the south side is not of special interest. The interior was not inspected during the resurvey. Historically, in around 1770, the base of the church tower was modified to accommodate a new hearse, and about 50 years later, a receptacle was provided for the hearse. However, Rev. Fawcett, who died in 1867, noted in 1850 that the church tower was still being used for rubbish. This information is referenced in Rev. E W Brereton's "History of the Ancient and Historic Church of St Andrew," published in 1909.
