Description
Nos 40 to 42 on Cliff Street are an early 19th-century range of houses. Nos 40 and 41 are two storeys high, while Nos 42 and 43 are three storeys. The buildings are primarily brick, except for No 42, which is made of ashlar. They appear as a cohesive row due to their similar architectural details. Each house features pedimented doorcases with semi-circular radiating fanlights, although only the fanlight of No 41 is glazed. The doorcases are flanked by fluted pilasters and lead to six-fielded panelled doors. No 40 has two sloped dormers, and all windows have stone flat arches without glazing bars. There is a rendered plinth at the base. No 41 has two windows, one of which is blocked, with flush frames and glazing bars. The windows of No 42 also have stone flat arches, complete with keystones. No 43 includes a passage door to the right, and its ground and first-floor windows feature keystones. All ground floor windows, except for No 41, have fielded panelled shutters.
