Piers And Railings Flanking Carriage Drive Approximately 20 Metres To East Of Studley Lodge

The piers and railings flanking the carriage drive are located approximately 20 metres east of Studley Lodge. They were built in the mid to late 18th century for John and William Aislabie. The main piers are made of ashlar stone and sit on a plinth, while the railings and intermediate piers are wooden. The total length of the structure is about 40 metres, and there are three stone piers on each side of the drive, although the gates are missing.

The stone piers are square in shape, approximately 2 metres high, and feature a deep moulded cornice and a flat cap. The wooden piers that flank the gateway are around 1.5 metres high and have a pyramidal cap. There is also a wooden pier positioned halfway between the two inner stone piers; it is slightly shorter than the stone piers and has a band, moulded cornice, and a shallow pyramidal cap. The railings consist of top and bottom rails with closely spaced bars topped with pyramidal finials.

These railings, along with the former low gate, cross the main drive and principal vista of Studley Park, which extends from the obelisk to Ripon Cathedral. An identical railing can be found crossing the drive to the east of Studley Lodge.
