Description

The Devils Chimney is a gazebo built around 1740 for John Aislabie, located on the north cliff-top overlooking the Seven Bridges Walk in Studley Park. This single-storey building is constructed of coursed squared gritstone and features a roof made of massive slabs. It has a square shape and is positioned at the edge of a cliff, providing views of the valley below, which includes the Rustic Bridges.

The gazebo has a doorway on the east side, which is embellished with rock-faced rustication on the lintel. The other three sides have square windows that are fitted with plain iron bars and have lintels similar to that of the doorway. It has a projecting plinth and a flat roof. The design of The Devils Chimney is inspired by a monument traditionally attributed to the Horatii and Curiatii at Ariccia, near Rome. A drawing by Runciman from the mid-18th century, which depicts this design, is preserved in the National Gallery of Scotland. Originally, the Studley version featured four corner pinnacles.
