Description

The stables and coach-house at Spring Hill School were built around 1841 for the Bishop of Ripon. They are made of limestone with ashlar dressings and have a Welsh slate roof. The buildings form three sides of a courtyard, featuring a two-storey, three-bay stable block on the west side, flanked by single-storey ranges on the south and north sides. The south side likely served as a wash-house, accessible from the service yard connected to the palace, while the north side is a carriage house that has been converted into garages. The east side of the yard is enclosed by a wall and double gates.

The facade of the west range includes a central arch with a recessed board door and tiestone jambs, flanked by two two-light chamfered mullion windows, with single-light windows above under gables. There is a large lantern on the ridge, featuring a clock, spire, and weather vane. The coach-house range has four entrances, with the ones on the right retaining their original double board doors. The wash-house range has a tall ridge stack on the right and three vents on the left return (east gable end). The enclosing wall on the east side is approximately 2.5 meters high, topped with ridged coping and gate piers that have stepped pyramidal caps. The double board gates feature pierced cruciform decoration and strap hinges.
