Description

This is a former Old Town Hall, dating from around 1870, though it may be slightly earlier. It is built in a heavy Italianate style. The building is large, with roughly marked ashlar stonework, and the end bays are rusticated and slightly projecting. It features a panelled frieze with scrollwork, a projecting moulded cornice, and a balustraded parapet. There are six windows to the upper floors; the second-floor windows are square, with eared moulded architrave surrounds. The tall first-floor windows have architrave surrounds with flanking strips featuring guilloche moulding, carved brackets to the pediments above (straight above the four central windows, segmental above the outer ones), and panelled aprons below the sill course. The ground floor has been altered with a new bank front, but the end bays retain original features, including flanking rusticated Corinthian pilasters and carved brackets to the projecting cornices. The right-hand bay has a carriageway with an architrave arch, while the left-hand bay features a doorway with a similar design. Films by Louis Lumière were shown here in 1897. The building is listed for group value with Nos 33 and 34 St Nicholas Street.
