SOUTH OTTERINGTON NEWBY WISKE ROAD SE 38 NE (north side) 3/45 Church of St Andrew GV II

Church. 1847 by Anthony Salvin. Squared coursed stone, ashlar, graduated stone slate roof. West tower, nave with north aisle and south porch, chancel. In neo-Norman style. 3 stage tower: clasping buttresses, on second stage a round-arched light, belfry window having 2 round-arched lights and columns with cushion capitals, set under larger round arch. Lombard frieze, hipped pyramidal roof. Nave: 3 bays, plinth, clasping half- height buttresses, round-arched 1-light windows with sill band. Gabled porch: Norman-style doorway, inner doorway with dogtooth work. Gable cross. North aisle has similar windows. Chancel: 2 bays. Central priests' doorway with columns and dogtooth work, flanked by 1-light arched windows with dogtooth work, sill band, corbelled cornice, gable cross. East end: two single-light arched windows; circular window above with radiating tracery. Interior: 3-bay north arcade has round columns with scalloped capitals supporting moulded round arches. Chancel arch: 3-columned half piers with moulded capitals support moulded arch. King-post roof supported by corbels with faces carved on. Neo-Norman arched pulpit and reading desk.
