Description
The gate-piers with gates located on the driveway approximately 50 metres north-east of Farnley Hall date from the 18th and 19th centuries. They are constructed from ashlar and gritstone, featuring wrought-iron gates. The inner gate-piers stand about 4 metres high and are square in section, with a pilaster on the outer face. They have a chamfered plinth, a moulded collar, and a deep cornice topped with a ball finial, although the left finial has fallen. The outer gate-piers are approximately 2.5 metres high and also square in section, with a chamfered plinth and roll moulding beneath a deep cornice, topped with a ball finial. The gates consist of outer single leaves and inner double leaves, made with heavy bars and three flat rails that imitate strap hinges with scroll tendrils, and the top edges are ramped. It is likely that one or both pairs of gate-piers were originally from Hawksworth Hall and were erected in the 19th century when the gates were added.
