Description

The pair of cemetery chapels at Otley Cemetery were built around 1875 and are designed in the Gothic Revival style. They are constructed from rock-faced and ashlar sandstone and feature graduated Welsh slate roofs. The chapels are single-storey and gable-fronted, connected by an archway beneath a two-stage tower topped with a spire.

The central tower is notable for its quoined side buttresses and a moulded pointed arch that rises from corbelled shafts, complete with a hoodmould that has head-carved stops. The belfry stage is offset and includes two cusped and louvred windows, which are also linked by a hoodmould. The tower culminates in a broach spire adorned with lucarnes in two tiers.

Each chapel is connected by narrow recessed bays that feature single-light windows under hoodmoulds. They each have a chamfered plinth, quoins, offset angle buttresses, and large four-light windows with cusped and foiled heads under hoodmoulds. The gables are finished with shaped kneelers and copings. The side doorways beneath the tower have moulded arches with hoodmoulds, while the opposing side doorways are similar but set within gabled projections. Each side also has two-light windows and cusped and foiled gable openings at the rear.

Inside, the chapel on the right contains fitted pews and an arch-braced roof supported by corbels, while the left chapel is similar in design but is currently used as a storage space.
