Description
East Lodges, with gates, gate-piers, and railings, are located on the west side of Leathley to Farnley Road in Farnley. These structures date from the late 18th century, with a 19th-century addition. They are built of ashlar stone and have Westmorland slate roofs. There are two lodges, each with a square plan and a single storey, consisting of one bay. The south walls feature sash windows with glazing bars set in moulded architraves, along with a roll-moulded string course. Each lodge has a dentilled cornice that returns to a pedimented gable, topped with a corniced ridge stack. There are also 20th-century glazed doors in moulded architraves facing the driveway from each lodge.
To the right of the lodge on the right, there is a lower, two-storey, two-bay addition. The gate-piers are made of ashlar, square in section, and approximately 5 metres high. They have chamfered plinths that support a single solid block forming the gate-pier. The gate-piers also feature a roll-moulded string and a deep dentilled cornice similar to the lodges, topped with a stepped cap that has an eagle sculpture.
The lodges and gate-piers are connected by a low ashlar wall that supports railings approximately 2 metres high, featuring spear-head finials and roundels in the top and bottom rails. The gates are double-leaved with dog-bars, a base rail adorned with fleur-de-lis and roundels, and a lock rail and top rail also featuring roundels, with spear-head finials on the bars. The East Lodge is associated with Farnley Hall and is believed to have been designed by the artist J M W Turner, who often stayed at the Hall as a guest of Walter Fawkes, who died in 1825. Among Turner's collection of paintings is a notable depiction of the Lodges, with Farnley Hall in the background.
