Description
The building is a pair of almshouses, originally constructed in 1769 for Mrs. Ann Hitch. It is made of coursed gritstone and features a stone slate roof. The structure consists of a two-storey, two-bay central block flanked by single-storey, four-bay wings. The central entrance has a 20th-century part-glazed door with a moulded surround, a pulvinated frieze, and a cornice above. On either side of the entrance are 24-pane sash windows set in plain surrounds. Above the door is a semicircular window with a plain surround and a sill band that extends to the eaves level of the side wings. The wings each have end panelled doors with overlights, and 24-pane sashes between the doors, all featuring plain surrounds. There is an inscription above the door that reads: "From Desire of Fulfilling to the utmost of Her Ability The Benevolent Intentions of Henry Hitch Esq. This School and Hospital was Erected and Endowed by Ann Hitch His Only Surviving Sister and Executrix. 1769." This inscription is a modern replica, while the original is located on the ground at the west end of the building. For further information, refer to H. Speight's "Upper Wharfedale," published in London in 1900, page 123.
