Description

This is a range of shops, built between 1874 and 1875 by George Dawson to a design by J.H. Hirst. It comprises a three-storey, nine-bay range with a curved corner treatment, and is included on the list for group value. The building is constructed of grit stone ashlar and has a slate roof. A cornice is topped by draped urns. The ground and first floors feature rusticated pilasters, with windows in a recessed arcade on the second floor. Blind balustraded balconies are present on the first and second floors. The second-floor windows are arched, while the ground and first floors have segmental arched openings with key stones. Modern shop windows and doorways occupy the ground floor. Numbers 2 to 24 (even) and the Royal Baths form a group with the return of No 3 Crown Place.
