Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade II* listed building located in Gate Helmsley. It features an early 13th-century arcade and a 15th-century west tower, with substantial restoration carried out in 1885-1886. The church is constructed from sandstone ashlar and has a Welsh slate roof. It comprises a west tower, a three-bay aisled nave with a south porch, a two-bay chancel with a single-bay aisle to the south, and a chapel to the north.
The tower is three stages high, with a blocked window and a three-light window featuring Perpendicular tracery on the second stage. Above this are two two-light belfry windows, topped with a battlement and later pinnacles. The nave has 19th-century square-headed windows in the aisles and clerestory, a basket arch leading to the south porch, and a pointed south door. The chancel's south aisle has two shouldered windows, while a reset 13th-century lancet can be found in the north chapel. The east window consists of three stepped lancets.
Inside, there is a 12th-century capital reused as a stoup in the porch, a 13th-century round-arched arcade, and a pointed 15th-century arch of two chamfered orders leading to the west tower.
