Description

This is an 1840s stucco terrace of four storeys with an attic and basement, located at 1-5 Cliff Bridge Terrace. The ground floor is rusticated. A continuous cast iron balcony runs along the first floor, supported by pairs of cut stone brackets. The terrace features second and third-floor sill courses, a frieze, and a projecting eaves cornice. The low-pitched slate roof has pedimented dormers and later attic casements. Broad, stuccoed, corniced chimney stacks are present. There are a total of 18 windows, most of which are sash windows, with a few retaining glazing bars. The first-floor windows are full-length, positioned within architrave surrounds and featuring flat, wreathed brackets supporting cornices. Upper-floor windows have architrave surrounds; those on the first floor have eared surrounds, and moulded sills project from block consoles on the sill courses. Most of the doors have been altered, but two remain, consisting of six fielded panels, double doors, and rectangular fanlights. The terrace block is notable, forming a backdrop to the Tile Museum and the adjoining terrace of shops, which acts as a retaining wall with a flight of steps. The listed buildings in Cliff Bridge Terrace form an important group.
