Description
15 St Nicholas Cliff is a late 18th century house in a terrace, built in 1793, and is one of the least altered in the group. The building has four storeys, constructed of painted brick, with a basement and an attic floor. It features a wood triglyph frieze and an eaves cornice. The third floor has three square windows, which have been replaced with later casements. On the left side, there is a broad canted wood bay from the mid-19th century, with pilasters dividing the lights on each floor, topped with a frieze and cornice. To the right of the entrance, tall recessed sashes are present, with the second-floor window retaining its glazing bars. The door consists of six fielded panels and has a semi-circular fanlight above it. The doorcase is notable for its engaged composite Corinthian columns, a broken entablature with urn reliefs, and an open dentil pediment. The area railings leading up to the door are made of turned iron rails with urn finialed standards.
A partial inspection of the interior reveals a full-height rectangular stairwell featuring a cantilevered open string staircase with slender turned balusters and a swept continuous moulded handrail. The ground floor front room has a panelled dado and a wooden fireplace surround flanked by fluted pilasters that were previously painted to imitate marble. It also includes a good iron curved basket grate with fluting.
