Description
The gates and gate piers in the west garden wall, located approximately 25 metres south of the west pavilion at Ripley Park, were likely constructed between 1817 and 1818 for Sir William Amcotts Ingilby, although they may incorporate late 18th-century ironwork. The gate piers are made of ashlar and stand about 5 metres high, featuring a plinth and a cornice band, topped with ball and cushion finials. The gates consist of two leaves with plain bars, short dog bars that have arrow-head finials, and a scrolled lock rail. The overthrow displays delicate C and S scrolls, with a central Ingilby star set in a roundel. Notably, the gate piers are not positioned at right angles to the wall but are instead aligned towards the south-west, following the line of the footpath approach from the castle. The 19th-century gardens occupy the site of earlier gardens, and it is likely that the gateway was reused.
